Bio

Phoebe Porter is an Australian contemporary jeweller who combines geometric abstraction, bold colour and balancing of juxtaposed elements to create work that resonates with influences of the Bauhaus and Russian Constructivism. Trained in gold and silver smithing, Phoebe skillfully combines industrial materials and processes with precious elements using refined hand-making skills and a design language gained over twenty-five years of practice.

Trained under German-born silversmith Johannes Kuhnen, Phoebe later undertook a mentorship with Blanche Tilden, one of Australia’s leading contemporary jewellers - these experiences laid the foundation for her distinguished career.

After almost a decade honing her craft in Melbourne, Phoebe moved back to her hometown of Canberra and now works from a beautiful heritage studio at Gorman Arts Centre. Here she produces her distinctive jewellery collections and relishes the opportunity for new creative projects such as her ongoing collaboration with fashion designer Alice Van Muers of Edition Label.

Phoebe's work is highly collectable and is represented in public collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of South Australia and the Powerhouse Museum. As well as regular exhibitions across Australia, Phoebe has been invited to exhibit in London, Japan, Germany and Washington. Her accolades include a Victorian Premier’s Design Mark and being named DESIGN Canberra Festival Designer-in-Residence, as well as grants from the Australia Council, Arts Victoria, and Arts ACT.

With a career spanning more than two decades, Phoebe Porter remains a dynamic and evolving force in Australia’s jewellery and design landscape. Her work exemplifies a commitment to craftsmanship and innovation, securing her legacy in the world of contemporary jewellery.

“Porter's jewellery will beguile you with its subtle textures and surprising wearability…Phoebe Porter is a relatively young artist but this exhibition reveals her as having the discipline and expertise of a master jeweller.”

  • Ring sizing is quite a detailed process. Each finger is different, and wide rings fit differently to narrow rings.

If you are able to visit Gorman Art Centre, Phoebe is happy to confirm your ring size in person (by appointment only). Alternatively, Phoebe can send you a sizing gauge so you can measure your ring size at home.

When measuring your ring size at home, keep in mind that there are many factors that can affect the size of your finger, such as temperature, humidity and exercise. Phoebe suggests that you size your hand at room temperature – this should provide you with a size that should be close to perfect most of the time.

She recommends that you should have to push your ring on tightly over your knuckle and it should spin slightly around the base of your finger. There should be some resistance when the ring is taken off – this will help to keep the ring on when your fingers are cold or wet.

Ultimately, how a ring fits is a personal thing. The correct size is the one that you feel the most confident and comfortable with.

  • If your Phoebe Porter ring needs to be re-sized, please get in touch to arrange a quote for this service. The cost depends on the ring design, materials and how many sizes the ring needs to go up or down and will be assessed on a case by case basis.

Tantalum, titanium and stainless steel rings cannot be easily resized, but they may be able to be stretched up a little or have a sleeve added to reduce the size.

  • Phoebe Porter is committed to incorporating heirloom gemstones and precious metals into new custom pieces where possible. These materials need to be assessed on a case by case basis to determine their suitability and the cost involved. Please get in touch if you would like to arrange an appointment to discuss working with heirloom materials.

  • If you require a repair or refurbishment of a piece made by Phoebe Porter, please get in touch. Most pieces can be repaired for a small fee.

Due to time constraints Phoebe Porter only undertakes repairs on her own work.

  • Jewellery made from precious metals will scratch and wear naturally over time and these marks become the story of your piece. Having said that, it is best to avoid letting your jewellery come into contact with very hard materials such as steel and concrete.

Also avoid wearing your jewellery while swimming, lifting weights or doing heavy hand work and avoid exposure to harsh chemicals and extreme temperatures.

Always try to protect your stone-set jewellery from potential impacts. Even diamonds—the hardest of stones—can break or be chipped from a hard knock or shock. If you notice the stones have become loose, please return them for repair. Stone-set jewellery should be checked by a jeweller from time to time to ensure the integrity of the setting.

Please return your jewellery for complementary cleaning and/or refinishing when Required.

    STORAGE

Store your jewellery in a clean, dry place, preferably in its original box or a soft pouch, separated from other pieces, to prevent scratches and tarnishing.

    CLEANING

Gently clean your jewellery with a soft, lint-free cloth. Use warm, soapy water and a soft brush for more thorough cleaning. Avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, or abrasive materials.

    WEARING TIPS

Remove your jewellery before swimming, lifting weights or doing heavy hand work and avoid exposure to harsh chemicals and extreme temperatures.

    TITANIUM AND TANTULUM

These metals are highly durable and resistant to tarnishing. Clean with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth.

    GOLD

Avoid exposure to chlorine, which can weaken the metal over time. Regular polishing with a jewellery cloth can help maintain its shine.

    SILVER

Silver will naturally tarnish over time. It can be cleaned with a good quality silver cloth or solution. Phoebe recommends Hagerty’s silver cleaning products, which are available for purchase from her studio.

    PRECIOUS STONES

Always try to protect your stone-set jewellery from potential impacts. Even diamonds, the hardest of stones, can break or be chipped from a hard knock or shock. If you notice the stones have become loose, please return them for repair. A jeweller should check stone-set jewellery occasionally to ensure the integrity of the setting.

    ANODISED ALUMINIUM

Anodising is a surface treatment that can chip or scratch if it comes into contact with hard materials such as steel and concrete. It can be cleaned gently with warm water and dishwashing detergent. Always store your anodised aluminium pieces separately in the original box.
